What You See Is What You Get
It was Monday morning
and I was preparing to leave for work. I wasn’t looking forward to
stepping out into a hot steamy Louisiana morning in September. The
first day of autumn was three days away and it was anything but autumn
weather. My eleven year old son, Cullen, stepped out on the porch to
feed our cat. When he came back in, I asked him about the weather.
“Was it hot and muggy?” His reply was simply it was foggy outside. I
said, “It must be yucky out there?” He replied, “No, actually it is
very beautiful”.
Suddenly I was
reminded that you get what you look for. If you look for beauty you
will see beauty. If you look for the bad you will see the bad. He was
right. The fog that blanketed our yard looked like a beautiful
painting. Artists in Louisiana have received international fame and
great sums of money for paintings of such a scene. As the old saying
goes, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.
My “Monday” attitude
caused me to nearly miss the beauty. Everyday, my choice determines
what I miss or enjoy. Will I miss priceless moments when my children
are laughing and playing together? What about those priceless moments
that really can’t be captured by any camera? Do I slow down and savor
the precious visits with parents, grandparents or elderly loved ones
while they are still healthy and mentally capable of interaction? Will
my “grown-up grouchiness” cheat me of a “wonder”? Will I skip an
opportunity to worship God because of my circumstance?
O Lord, how much of
your beauty and wonder do I miss out on because of my circumstantial
vision? Open my eyes. Help me to see as if seeing for the very first
time. May my eyes sparkle like a child’s on Christmas morning every
time I look at you and your creation!
Open
thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
(Psalms 119:18)
Jesus You’re a wonder
to me
Since You came and set
my spirit free
I’ll always be amazed
by the wonder of Your grace
You’ll always be a
wonder to me!
